In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court of India has decided not to cancel the 2024 NEET-UG exam, providing much-needed clarity for countless medical aspirants. The court reviewed the evidence presented by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and concluded that there was insufficient material to suggest that the integrity of the exam had been compromised or that there was a systemic breach affecting the results.
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, delivering the court's opinion, noted that cancelling the exam would not be justified based on the current evidence. The court acknowledged that there were issues, such as question paper leaks in Hazaribagh and Patna, but found no conclusive evidence to warrant a retest.
This decision comes amid significant controversy and student protests over alleged irregularities, including leaks and impersonation, during the exam held on May 5. The NEET-UG 2024, conducted by the NTA, was taken by over 23 lakh students across 4,750 centers in 571 cities, including 14 international locations.
